Campbell College has produced many high achievers over the past 126 years. Whether this is in the academic, medical, arts or sporting areas. You may or may not be aware that one of those is Professor Bill Campbell (3171). Of only 11 people from the emerald isle to have received a Nobel Prize, he is the only one to have received it in the Field of Medicine. Prof Bill discovered Ivermectin, which amongst its contribution to the agriculture sector, cures River Blindness. He subsequently lobbied his company to make the drug available to third world countries and it has helped millions of people throughout the world.
A native of Donegal Bill attended Campbell as a Boarder and credits his Biology Teacher Robert (Bug) Wells for igniting his interest. A couple of years ago he visited the College and gave up his time to both Junior School and College pupils.
His home town of Ramelton is in the process of ensuring his legacy is remembered by erecting a statue of him. Both the College and the Society have undertaken to contribute to the costs associated with this, along with those institutions he attended post Campbell, TCD and RCS.
