We previously reported on the beginning of our tree planting phase which started last March when around 200 Blackthorn and Hawthorne wips were planted around the campus perimeter.

Additional planting took place this week with 22 larger native tree specimens being planted along our driveway and key sites around campus. After initial consultation with The Woodland Trust Northern Ireland, our Estates Manager Stephen Woodrow and Head Groundsman Norman Rae, selected trees based on their suitability for our site and preferred growing conditions. As well as environmental considerations, sites were selected to replace the many trees that had to be removed due to Ash Dieback Disease. The following species were planted:

  • Spaeth Alder
  • Kaiger Linden
  • Red Twig Lime
  • Copper Beech
  • Horse Chestnut

You can learn more about these trees on the Woodland Trust website. We have provided some footage here of the trees being placed in position:

Our young trees will soon begin to take root and push through their extensive root ball. It will take about 2 years for the trees to become more stable at which point we will be able to remove the strappings. We are looking forward to seeing these trees grow and thrive in our grounds!
