The Caruth Cup 2026 - Old Campbellian Hockey Saturday 29 August 2026

The Caruth Cup 2026

Played in a round-robin format, 1st XI and 2nd XI teams from the College were pitted against two teams representing 'Younger' and 'Older' (much older!), Old Campbellians, with an average score over the four matches dictating the eventual winner of the Cup.

The inaugural Caruth Cup, played between the Old Campbellian Society and the College, was held on Saturday 29th August, in memory of Brian 'Cookie' Caruth. Brian (father of Old Campbellian, Peter Caruth (9600), former Irish Hockey International, Olympian and member of Campbell's 2006 Burney Cup, runner's up squad), was integral to hockey life at the College for many years, and whose impact the College continues to benefit from today.

Always hard fought, the adage 'Old age and treachery will always defeat youth and skill', was particularly pertinent (as the Headmaster quite succinctly noted), with the experience of the OC's prevailing over the athleticism and undoubted skill of both College teams on this occasion. Pete Caruth was on hand to accept the Caruth Cup on behalf of the Old Campbellians - a fitting end to a successful day.

Many thanks to Mr Damien Styles, Head of Year 8 at the College, who has been a driving force behind the College Hockey Club for many years and who has long been a firm supporter of Old Campbellian Hockey.

The Old Campbellian Society were honoured to sponsor the event, with enduring links between the College and The Society prevalent throughout the day and illustrated by the great turn-out from Old Campbellians of all ages, in both playing and supporting roles. The support and encouragement shown by families of CCB students and Old Campbellians alike was integral to the success of the day, with a truly family oriented feeling pervading through the whole affair.

If any Old Campbellians would like to offer their services in support of the College Hockey Club (including coaching assistance, matchday support or by way of a donation), please don't hesitate to contact the OC Society or College directly to register your interest.

This was a great advertisement of the powerful links and sense of community that exist between the College and Old Campbellians and we look forward to creating a lasting legacy through future instalments of the Caruth Cup.
