CCB WIN THE 2009 AGNEW CUP.

30 August 2009
Tristan Barry presents the 2009 Agnew Cup to CCB Captain Charles McCombe.

CCB 1stX1 wrestled the Agnew Cup away from the Old Boys with a well earned 2-0 win at Campbell on Saturday 29th August.

As expected, the first half saw the Old Campbellians in the ascendancy, making several attacks on the CCB goal, but poor finishing and resolute defending by the schoolboys left the scoreline level at the break.

In the second half, the CCB squad broke through the midfield and took advantage of slack defending by the OCs to present winger Michael Carey with a simple tap in to open the scoring.

Shocked into action, the old boys immediately responded with a flowing attack which left James Finlay (returning to hockey after a 2 year absence) with only the CCB keeper to beat; but his well struck shot from the edge of the circle rebounded off the post and agonisingly flashed across the goalline to safety.

Campbell pressed again and won a penalty corner, which saw Josh Mackey's well taken drag flick deflected off the outstretched arm of keeper Andy Partridge into the OC goal.

Whilst the OCs were definitely not at their best, the College X1 was obviously fitter, more organised, and had much more of a purpose to their play than in recent years. They fully deserved to win, and will hopefully take confidence from this result at the start of their season.
