Dublin Dinner – 27 Feb 09
The OC Dublin Branch Dinner was held on Friday 27 February 2009, the evening prior to the Ireland v England rugby international at the Kildare Street and University Club,St Stephen’s Green. The black-tie evening began with a drinks reception at 7.30pm and was attended by 25 OCs and guests including the Headmaster, Jay Piggot and Dr David Boyle, the President of the Old Campbellian Society. An excellent three course menu accompanied by wine was provided by the Club in the elegant surroundings of the BallyEdmond Room.
The guest speaker was Mark Pollock, a highly renowned adventurer and motivational speaker. Following the customary speeches by the Headmaster and President, Mark gave a very interesting account of his adventures since losing his sight in 1998 which included rowing for Northern Ireland at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, completing six marathons in one week in China’s Gobi Desert and the North Pole marathon. Mark gave a fascinating account of his participation in the first race to the South Pole since Scott and Amundsen’s Race in Jan/Feb 1911/12 which he had recently completed. This was followed by a lengthy question and answer session which made for a very enjoyable and interesting dinner.
The socialising continued late into the evening, however rumours that the President was spotted leaving the VIP lounge of Reynards in the early hours are unfounded!
