The Friends of Campbell College Pipe Band Aim
The aim of the 'Friends' is: "to help provide funding for the running and upkeep of Campbell College Pipe Band".
Origins

On 18th February 2000 a Burns' Supper was organised by an enthusiastic group of parents of the boys playing in Campbell College Pipe Band at that time, together with two teaching staff and a former member of the band. They set about creating an event which turned out to be not just a celebration of that famous Scottish poet and song writer Robert Burns but a real showcase for the considerable talent of the Band members as well as an excellent fundraiser. The event was an enormous success and shortly afterwards the group formally adopted the name "Friends of The Campbell College Pipe Band"

A Committee was formed and comprises of a Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary and 3 elected committee members. The Committee is elected annually at the Annual General Meeting, usually held in the autumn of each year. Committee members retire annually but are eligible for re-election.

The Friends of Campbell College Pipe Band Committee 2006/07
Chairperson: Jim McNeice
Treasurer: Ivan Wilson
Secretary: Christine Rankin
Parents Committee: John Young, Jennifer Woods, Claire McNally, Kathy Boyd and Janet Taylor
Friends of the Band Representatives: Jackie Smith and Margaret Russell
Band Officer: Mr Andrew Millen

All parents of boys in the band are encouraged to come along to the AGM to hear what the band has been doing over the past year and what is planned to take place later in the year or even just to meet and support the committee members and the Band Officer.

Functions

Each year the Friends of Campbell College Pipe Band hold two fundraising efforts. The Bums' Supper, which has now become an annual event, on the last Friday in January and the Summer barbecue in mid June are both held at the College. The dates usually appear in the Headmaster's reports during the year, the Old Campbellian magazine and website or you can telephone any of the committee members for details. Tickets for these functions are purchased directly from the Treasurer.

All parents, families and friends are made very welcome at these events and we would encourage you to come along and join in the fun as well as encourage and support the boys in the Band. It is also an excellent way of getting to know other parents within the 'school family.'

Band uniform and equipment

Band uniform and equipment is expensive therefore a great deal of cost is involved in the running of the Band. All parents of boys issued with uniform and equipment are reminded that it must be cared for and handed back in good condition when a boy leaves the band, subject only to fair wear and tear!

Any missing items must be paid for or they will be charged through the school billing system. Band regulation socks are purchased by the boys and a stock is kept for when needed. Please telephone Christine Rankin for details.

History

Records in the December 1912 issue of The Campbellian at Campbell College refer to "our four stalwart pipers." An archive report in the 1915 issue states "The Band is showing great improvement."

A lot has changed since those early days when the Pipe Band was made up mainly of boarders at the school.

Today the Pipe Band is a separate section of the CCF and the boys practice on a regular basis. During the year the Band takes part in a number of public engagements as well as the annual traditional events at the College.

The Campbell College Pipe Band over the years has not only provided the music at its traditional events but entertainment to many folk far and near. Many 'Old Campbellians' can still be found playing their bagpipes around the world!

While many things have changed over the years, one thing that has not is the teamwork, discipline, pride in appearance and, most importantly, the obvious enjoyment the boys get from being part of Campbell College Pipe Band.

The Band continues to flourish with the support of the 'Friends' and we hope your son will enjoy being part of and take with him a part of this Campbell College icon.
